Hand Held Vector Sight Compass. Vintage tool – Marked’Japan’ on end of flashlight barrel – typical of early 1960’s manufacture. Function: Hold the barrel and aim the’sight’ at an object (nav aid, beacon light, etc) – and read the vector to that point directly under the viewing sight. The compass is graduated in 2° increments – makes for very accurate vector determination. The view of the compass rose is mediated thru a prism – which is adjustable for different conditions. The prism can be’flipped’ over – and viewed from the other side which will show the return vector (V +/- 180°). The barrel has a flashlight typical slide switch which illuminates the dial. There is a red bulb in place. This unit came with a clear bulb, but it was defective, and will not be supplied. This compass light uses two “C” batteries (NOT INCLUDED). BATTERY SAVER: note the white plastic barrel marked in photo #9 – this can easily be inserted in the flashlight between the upper battery and the bulb to prevent accidental illumination. Note that the battery barrel can be accessed by unscrewing the’tail’ of the case AND the head (which is where you access the’preventer barrel’). The’set screw’ seen below the prism assembly in photo #6 is the access to the’fluid chamber’. This is filled with OIL. It will be simple to add appropriate oil to this instrument to remove the air bubble. Excellent Case – designed specifically for this instrument. The compass is 9.75 long overall… The head is about 3.75 diameter… Weighs 1 pound 10 ounces (with batteries removed). The case is about 10.5 long… 5 square in profile… Weighs 1 pound 11 ounces. Total Weight is around 3 pounds 5 ounces… CONDITION: 9.25 out of 10 — Very Strong — no damage — no cracks or deformations. Function is free and easy. Compass glass also very good. Flashlight functions as designed. Only issues are purely cosmetic – some scratching of the black paint, some dents on the case. =- -=- -=- -=. Check out my other items.
