Excellent condition mid century light up artwork. Wonderful vintage signed Ashbrook Sudios style light up oil painting on board of Mid Century Modern style. Spanish galleon or Clipper type ships on the ocean. The painting has thickly applied paint on board with built-in colored and painted plastic “windows” on the ships which are back-lit by the lighting mounted to the back of the painting. The effect is a funky retro mood light that is also a nice piece of framed Modernist art. Wire hanger to the back. WHEN MADE: Mid 1900s. SIZE: The painting is approximately. CONDITION: Working condition with original lights, frame and back. The painting itself is in very good condition and free of chipping, dryness, stains or flaking and minor cosmetic wear from age. The colors are strong with no apparent muting or fading. It is still in its original frame which has a couple of small screw holes. Frame measures 43″ X 21″. It is made of solid wood stained very dark with leaves engraved all around. The lighting is very colorful but hard to show in the photos. Condition: Overall very good. Lights and switch work. Frame has a small amount of edge damage on the bottom that has been covered with furniture marker – see close up pic. Vintage JOHN HARE “Eastern Point Light” Glouchester Watercolor Painting. Sight size is 6 3/8″ x 8″. Frame is 13″ x 14 3/4″. Signed lower right corner. Frame has wear and chips. Gallery label on the back. He was primarily associated New England, especially Cape Cod, Massachusetts where he spent his summers from 1938 to 1965. However, he was in Florida where he was a member of the St. Augustine Art Association, and other locations on the East Coast. It is likely Hare was born in New York City. He first studied commercial art in Brooklyn at the Pratt Institute and also studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan. He worked for Hearst newspapers corporation, and in 1933 married. In the next few years, he and his wife traveled extensively, camping and painting and exhibiting his work in galleries. In 1935, they visited St. Augustine and an exhibition of his watercolors was held there in the old bank building by the cathedral. In Provincetown, they also exhibited paintings that Hare had completed in Florida. The couple liked St. About 1938, the Hares, attracted to the rolling farmland, moved to Amherst, Massachusetts. He also painted at Gloucester, and from 1967 to 1977, they lived at Yarmouthport, and in 1977, moved to Palm Beach, Florida where he died three years later. From an estate find of boxes and boxes of old, new and used toys, games and stuff is this vintage signed Ashbrook paintings. This is a mid century nautical painted on wood/board. This is missing electrical lightning & cardboard backing. It wouldnt be hard to add small strand of twinkle lights on back and attach a piece of cardboard behind it. Ashbrook Studios was a California Company from the 60s through the 80s. The back has resin windows to allow light to accent the painting. The artist also uses a raised relief throughout the painting. This measures approximately 42 x 20 1/2. The wood frame does have some minor dings due to age. Great art for potential investment as these are getting harder and harder to find.
