I was told this is an old explosion proof light out of an old submarine.
Each measures about 23 high. The round bottom base is 5 3/4 wide. The top signal part is about 6 3/4″ x 8 1/2″. The pair weighs 25 pounds total. I could not find them marked anywhere so not certain of maker of where these were used. The wiring has been cut so will need to be rewired. There is some normal surface pitting but rather minor and as expected from having been used on an ocean vessel. I find no damage or missing parts – see my 12 detailed photos. A signal lamp (sometimes called an Aldis lamp, after Arthur Cyril Webb Aldis, who invented a widely used design, or a Morse lamp) is a visual signaling device for optical communication, typically using Morse code. Modern signal lamps are focused lamps which can produce a pulse of light. In large versions, this pulse is achieved by opening and closing shutters mounted in front of the lamp, either via a manually operated pressure switch, or, in later versions, automatically. With hand held lamps, a concave mirror is tilted by a trigger to focus the light into pulses. The lamps were usually equipped with some form of optical sight, and were most commonly used on naval vessels and in airport control towers (using color signals for stop or clearance). Manufactured during WW2 this heavy metal light shutter was used by attaching on to a 12 light on a boat to relay signals to other Naval craft during blackouts or communication problems. The Scotsman was a cattle hauler in WW2 and Winston Churchill was even on board at one time. Of South TX was tasked with dismantling and scrapping the Apollo/HMS Royal Scotsman. Some items of value were placed in a storage container instead of being scrapped. This is as much history as I have for these items. I cannot fully guarantee the authenticity, but all my research so far confirms the above. I picked these up a while ago on Cape Cod MA. The globes are ruby red and cobalt blue and are undamaged just in need of a good cleaning. The clamp mounts are also in nice straight condition just need to be restored, primed and painted if you desired to do so. Each globe in the housing measures app. 6.75 high and 5.5 in diameter. The overall size of each mounting is app 14.5L x 6.5W x 8 D from the back of the mount to the top of the lamp housing. They will of course also have to be rewired.
